![]() That day came within a few years of the first deployment of a Cameron 'Mech, when Lyran commandos stormed a Terran 'Mech factory and stole the design secrets. Massive, imposing, and armed and armored to the teeth, the first BattleMechs were like nothing the Inner Sphere had seen before, and the results showed that, as dozens of planets fell to the Hegemony's ' Mechs before anyone else gained the ability to oppose them in kind. Their scientists had invented the BattleMech. In 2439, the Terran Hegemony found what they had all been looking for centuries - a true edge on the field of war. After McKenna's death, hereditary possession of the Director-Generalship passed to the Cameron dynasty. McKenna then stated that his goal was to reunite all of humankind under the leadership of Terra once more. In 2314, Admiral James McKenna dissolved the Terran Alliance Parliament, which was on the verge of civil war, and established the Terran Hegemony under his leadership. Rapidly, innumerable small kingdoms formed, and almost as rapidly they merged or were conquered until only a handful remained. The Liberal Party took control of the Alliance Parliament from the Expansionist Party and announced that it was withdrawing the Alliance to within sixty light-years (two jumps), granting the outer colonies independence whether they wanted it or not. Terra had been unified under the Terran Alliance in 2086, but the Alliance found it was becoming increasingly difficult to maintain control over the outlying colonies, and after a long string of rebellions, the Alliance ended its attempts to rule all of humanity. During this period, there was a great deal of political strife. Further outward growth would continue for hundreds of years more, but by this point the most substantial period of growth was over. Within a mere hundred and fifty years, humanity had flung itself outward to occupy the area later known as the Inner Sphere - thousands of planets in a rough circle about a thousand light-years in radius, centered on Terra. By 2110, a scientific post had been established on New Earth, and in 2116 the first colonists landed there. Thomas Kearny and Takayoshi Fuchida's theories were disparaged during their lifetimes, but the theories they developed provided the groundwork for the eventual development and use of faster-than-light travel in the early 2100s. The work of two obscure, disgraced physicists, in the end, proved to be far more valuable than all other advances in the 21st century. ![]() However, the ability to colonize other planets was not fully realized by the leading scientist of the time. Interstellar exploration finally began with the development of Fusion power in 2020 after decades of research, leading to a relatively compact power source capable of providing a virtually limitless supply of energy. The first lunar settlement was established in December 2016, and the first manned mission to Mars launched the following year. ![]() The war ended with a Western Alliance victory in 2014.īeginning with the establishment of the Alliance Space Command in 2016, humanity began moving out into the solar system. The republic crumbled in 2011, igniting a civil war that drew in NATO and saw the successful use of the Western Orbital Defense Network (WODeN), successor to the earlier SDI, to intercept a preemptive Russian missile attack against western targets. A 1997 coup d'etat by hard-line communists restored a militant, Soviet-style government in Russia and sparked a "Second Cold War" with NATO that lasted until the start of peaceful reforms under premier Oleg Tikonov in 2005. The United States, Europe and Japan announced in 1994 their intention to jointly construct an orbiting industrial facility named Crippen Station, which was successfully launched eleven years later. The earliest events distinct to the BattleTech universe occur after the end of the Cold War and the collapse of the Soviet Union. Equally important to BattleTech history are politics and technology. Incessant wars are the backdrop of most BattleTech stories and historical happenings, the majority of which concern individuals in the military rather than civilian sectors. Given its central theme of military conflict, the events of the BattleTech universe can be classed as a military history, albeit a fictional one. It can also be considered an alternate history distinct from our own, since its point of divergence from the real world occurs in the past this is not the focus of the series, though, and is more the result of real-world history overtaking the early years of the BattleTech timeline. The fictional events of the BattleTech universe constitute a future history that describes the course of humanity from modern times until the mid 32nd century.
